Behind the Letter: A is for Apple Cider Vinegar

Hello and welcome to the very first post of Behind the Letter. This is where I get to share the stories and intention behind some of the letters in The Crunchy ABCs. If you’ve ever wondered why a certain word was chosen or how it fits into everyday life, you’re in the right place.

So it only makes sense to begin with the first letter of the alphabet, A, which also happens to be the title of our very first book, A is for Apple Cider Vinegar.

Before this book ever existed, I had seen those “Let’s Make a Crunchy Alphabet” posts floating around on Facebook. They were the kind where someone would ask people to chime in with what each letter, from A to Z, should stand for in the crunchy lifestyle. And almost every single time, the same thing would happen. When it came to the letter A, the responses were nearly always apple cider vinegar. It showed up again and again across different posts at different times.

Which makes sense, because for so many families, apple cider vinegar is one of the very first swaps they make when they start learning about holistic or low-tox living. It’s familiar, accessible, and easy to use without feeling overwhelming. It doesn’t feel like a big commitment or a drastic change, which is often what makes it an early favorite.

Part of why apple cider vinegar sticks around is because it fits so naturally into everyday life. It’s one of those things that quietly works its way into routines without needing much thought or effort. Over time, it just becomes something you reach for, the same way you do other household staples.

Some families use it before or with meals as a way to support digestion, or as part of a general gut health routine they’ve built over time. Others mention it when talking about supporting balanced blood sugar, especially around heavier meals, which is why it comes up so often in everyday wellness conversations.

It also shows up seasonally, mixed with things like honey, lemon, or herbs during the colder months as a familiar way families support overall wellness.

For others, apple cider vinegar finds its way outside the kitchen. It might show up as a hair rinse, or as part of a gradual shift toward more natural, low-tox cleaning around the house. What starts as one use often leads to another, simply because it’s already there and easy to reach for.

Apple cider vinegar has a way of meeting people where they are. And sometimes, that’s exactly where a story like this should begin.
